NanoSonic specializes in the design and manufacture of innovative materials and devices, especially new materials, sensors and systems that are currently unavailable in the commercial market. We design and manufacture materials and devices with novel engineering behaviors with the overall goal to develop environmentally benign processes and techniques for these new materials. We have also developed new molecular self-assembly processes that allow the controlled synthesis of material structure at the nanometer level.
Our award-winning, high-tech company was founded in 1998 by Richard Claus, Ph.D., an expert in advanced materials and structures who won the Optical Engineering Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. In 2006, NanoSonic was ranked as the overall leader in a 13-state study of the strength of the nanotechnology industry. With 18 patents granted, we were also named to NASA’s Nano50.
NanoSonic’s staff is comprised of more than 25 research scientists, engineers, chemists, designers and fabricators. We work with all different sizes and types of companies and organizations, and clients including NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Transportation. Our work covers the entire range of product development from research, design and development, to manufacturing and commercialization. Located in Giles County, Virginia, NanoSonic is a privately-held Delaware C Corporation.
President, Chief Executive Officer
Richard Claus received a Ph.D. in EE from Johns Hopkins University in 1977. He served on Virginia Tech’s engineering faculty for 32 years and retired as the Hester Chair of Engineering. Claus has published more than 1,000 journal and conference papers and 30 patents, most related to advanced materials, transducers and instrumentation systems. His awards include the ASME/AIAA Adaptive Structures Prize, the ASCE Norman Medal, and an SPIE Lifetime Achievement Award. He directs programs related to the development of new materials, prototype systems and experimental testing.
Chief Development Officer
Jennifer Lalli received her Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from Virginia Tech. She worked as a polymer chemist at Avery Dennison prior to joining NanoSonic in 2002. At NanoSonic, Dr. Lalli led the research group that first demonstrated Metal Rubber™ in 2004, and later, Shape Memory MR, and Thoraeus Rubber shielding materials. She currently directs the design and synthesis for the production of new and innovative low H2 permeable nanocomposites for zero emission vehicles and space systems. As Chief Development Officer, she oversees NanoSonic’s ventures with new partners and economic growth within Giles County.
Chief Technology Officer
Vince Baranauskas received his Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Virginia Tech, with a focus on the synthesis and characterization of siloxane copolymers for use as durable oxidative barriers for metallic nanoparticles. Baranauskas is the inventor of one of NanoSonic’s core technologies, HybridSil®/HybridShield®, an advanced copolymer nanocomposite technology that is currently under evaluation on multiple military and commercial platforms, and received a 2011 R&D 100 Award. His work is focused on the synthesis of innovative copolymer nanocomposites for a broad spectrum of armor, corrosion, insulation, erosion, and thermal protection applications.
Chief Financial Officer
Melissa Campbell received her Bachelor of Science degree from George Mason University in Decision Sciences and Management Information Systems. Prior to joining NanoSonic, she worked in the Trust and Wealth Management field for an array of financial institutions. She is a Certified Paraplanner and a graduate of the American Bankers Association National Trust School. Campbell has an extensive background in business with exemplary understanding of financial planning and wealth management, with focus on the legal aspects of trusts and estates and the associated tax regulations.
VP Sensors and Systems
Hang Ruan received a Ph.D. in Optoelectronics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1996. He has more than twenty years of industrial and academic experience in the design, development and commercialization of optical fiber sensors, flexible electronics, and MEMS- and NEMS-based devices. At NanoSonic, Ruan directs the development of nano-scale devices, sensors and instrumentation systems. He leads the group that has demonstrated high frequency pressure sensors, optical antenna devices, and wireless networked sensors for biochemical detection. In 2017, he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech.
